Mango Records was a subsidiary of Chris Blackwell's Island Records, founded in 1972. When Island had evolved from its roots in ska/reggae, Blackwell though that music from the Caribbean once again deserved its own label, so he launched Mango Records. The label soon became instrumental for the worldwide success of reggae music in the 1970s, with artists like Black Uhuru and others. Mango survived for almost 25 years when it was discontinued in 1997. The US branch was closed in 1993.
A second Mango Records, completely unlrelated to the Island subsidiary, was started in New York, also in 1972. Founded by Latin Music bandleader and producer Harvey Averne, the label produced latin rock and salsa, with pianist and bandleader Eddie Palmieri as its first signing. Averne had to change the label name to Coco Records after just a few releases.
