Embryo Records was founded in 1969 by American jazz musician Herbie Mann as a division of Atlantic Records. It was distributed by the Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion Records. Embryo had a Jazz Series (SD 520-536) and a Rock Series (SD 730-734), and most of its albums were released in 1970 and 1971 before the label went on a long break. The final two albums came out in 1977 with a new label design.
