Colossus Records was founded by producer Jerry Ross in 1970. Ross, who owned Heritage Records at the time, signed a bunch of Dutch bands (Shocking Blue, Tee Set, George Baker Selection) he discovered on a trip to Europe, and launched Colossus to publish their albums in the United States.
The label was distributed by MGM Records, and after being independent for a few short months, became a subsidiary of MGM. Probably thanks to the Number One smash hit "Venus" by The Shocking Blue, MGM outright bought it off Jerry Ross. But this was a one-time success for Colossus, none of their next releases produced any more hits, so Colossus was closed again in 1971.
