Certron Corporation, at the time a manufacturer of magnetic tape, founded a music division in early 1970 to release records in a large variety of genres. This division became Certron Records, headed by Aubrey Mayhew, and based in Nashville, Tennessee. Four months after its inception, the label bought the assets of Diamond Records to "make the company even more diversified." (Billboard, May 30, 1970)
As for many of the hardware companies that tried to enter the recorded music business at that time, this strategy failed quickly and Certron survived for only about one year. None of its releases sold any numbers and the parent company closed this loss-making business accordingly, cancelling many albums that were already scheduled for release at that time.
