Brother Records was founded in 1966 by The Beach Boys and their business manager Nick Grillo to give the band more control over their products after a series of disagreements with their label Capitol Records. Brother is now a holding company that still holds the intellectual property rights of The Beach Boys.
The Beach Boys' 1967 Smiley Smile album was Brother's first album release, followed by the Carl Wilson produced The Flame album in 1970. That same year, Brother signed a distribution contract with Reprise Records, which led to the label eventually becoming part of the Warner Bros. family of labels.
