SABA (Schwarzwälder Apparate-Bau-Anstalt) was a German manufacturer for electronic equipment (radio and tv sets), based in the Black Forest area and founded in the 19th century. The record label was started in the early 1960s by SABA manager Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, known as 'HGBS', a jazz pianist who worked with jazz legends as Hans Koller and Albert Mangelsdorff since the 1950s.
The SABA label produced about 40 Jazz LPs until 1968 when its parent company was sold to an American GTE Corporation. The new owners had no interest in SABA's recording business so Brunner-Schwer founded his own new label, MPS Records, and brought in the entire SABA back catalogue.
