In 1965, writers and producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff started an independent label, Excel Records. In 1967 this label was renamed Gamble Records and a first album by The Intruders was released. Over the next few years, a handful more LP's were issued by Gamble before the label went quiet in 1970.
In 1971, Gamble and Huff founded Philadelphia International Records in cooperation with CBS Records. Gamble Records was folded into Philadelphia International as a subsidiary and Columbia/CBS distributed four more Gamble albums in 1973 before the subsidiary's name was changed to TSOP Records, The Sound Of Philadelphia, in 1974.
